Observership

Observerships for International Medical Graduates – Per the guidelines of the American Medical Association, the goal of an Observership Program is to help acculturate international medical graduates (IMGs) to the practice of medicine in the United States. Please be aware that an Observership Program is not intended to fill gaps in clinical knowledge or training; instead, it is meant to familiarize an IMG to the practice of medicine in a US clinical setting, and provide an introduction to American medicine as they will experience it in a hospital-based residency program.

The ECU/BSOM Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department accepts 2-3 observerships per year ONLY during the months of May and June. the observership experience is a maximum of 2 weeks duration. Minimum application criteria for our Observership Program are as follows:

  • Application must be received at least 90 days prior to proposed start date.
  • Applicants must have graduated from a medical school listed in the International Medical Education Directory ( www.faimer.org) within the past two years
  • Applicants must have a passing score on one or more United states Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CS, Step 2 CK and/or Step 3)
  • Applicants must submit USMLE transcript and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Status Report or ECFMG Certificate to the Observership program

To apply for an observership with our program, please complete the application program form and email to Debra MercerĀ  at mercerd@ecu.edu, or mail it to our department using the mailing address below. USMLE transcripts and ECFMG status report can be requested by the applicant to be sent directly to the Observership Program.
